Lot essay

The present example is one of the most popular of Jaeger-LeCoultre’s vintage-styled limited editions of recent years. The original Jaeger-LeCoultre Polaris Memovox of the 1960s is a world-renowned alarm wristwatch designed for divers. The most famous and much appreciated by collectors is Jaeger-LeCoultre’s Memovox Polaris Ref. The E859 of that period was chosen by the brand as the design prototype for the current Polaris collection, as well as this limited edition. In particular, this applies to the arrangement of the dial, with characteristic trapezoidal indexes expanding from the centre of the dial, and Arabic numerals at the cardinal points. The engraving of the symbolic image of a scuba diver on the caseback is similar to that found on the inner caseback of Jaeger-LeCoultre’s historic 1968 Memovox Polaris model. The second notable design feature of the present watch is the unusual and very attractive dark blue ‘double gradient’ colour scheme of the dial, reminiscent of the one used by the brand in the Memovox Alarm Ref. E870 HPG Polaris II of the 1970s, another famous historic Jaeger-LeCoultre diver’s alarm wristwatch.

The present example is one of the most popular of Jaeger-LeCoultre’s vintage-styled limited editions of recent years.

The dial’s interior part features a sunburst play of light, while the chapter ring is embellished with a crisp granular texture and the inner bezel has a deep matte navy blue tint. A piquant detail is the luminescent coating of the markers and hands, made by the beige Super-LumiNova, hinting at the vintage colour-change tritium luminophore. For the connoisseur of military-styled and diving watches, the present lot seems to be a highly desirable addition to the classic designs of the 1960s and 1970s. The Polaris Date Limited Edition is a watch made with state-of-the-art technologies, and for this reason it will remain in the history of watchmaking as an example of a completely different era, an interesting addition to its historical prototypes. Moreover, this collectible watch is a very attractive daily-wearer.

Reasons to bid

The Jaeger-LeCoultre Polaris Date Limited Edition Ref. 842.8.37 special commemorative limited-edition watch rarely comes up in the previously-worn watches market, and is therefore an excellent chance for the collector to obtain a fine, charismatic and rare mechanical timepiece of famed Jaeger-LeCoultre Polaris watch history, a memorial to a period in the development of watchmaking when buyers preferred practical wristwatches. The appeal of this lot is greatly enhanced by the characteristic military-styled and historically important dial design that appears only in this reference, introduced just once, in 2019.
