Lot essay

Watchmaker’s collaborations, which have become popular in recent years, bring a pleasant diversity to the landscape of modern watchmaking. Small brands get the opportunity to reach a wider audience by joining forces together. Collaborations often result in watches that none of the collaborating brands would otherwise have started producing. The present lot was released in 2020 as a collaboration of two brands each specializing in the production of collectible watches – H. Moser & Cie., who specialise in producing collectible watches to a large extent, and MB&F, whose focus is solely on such watches.

The design concept, with a high-domed crystal, a tourbillon that rises above the plane of the dial, and a raised and inclined time-indication sub-dial, was MB&F’s contribution to this project. H. Moser & Cie. produced the finished watch with a signature smoky (fumé) and sunburst dial. They also developed for this model an automatic movement with a flying tourbillon, equipping it with a cylindrical hairspring – a shape known for traditionally being used in precision watches and marine chronometers.

The design concept, with a high-domed crystal, a tourbillon that rises above the plane of the dial, and a raised and inclined time-indication sub-dial, was MB&F’s contribution to this project.

The self-winding HMC 810 caliber of the present reference is based on the H. Moser & Cie. HMC 802 self-winding tourbillon caliber that itself uses parts from the H. Moser & Cie. basic time-only self-winding caliber HMC 200. The HMC 810 is beautifully finished, with bevelled bridges decorated with notably wide (a H. Moser & Cie. speciality) Côtes de Genève stripes, screwed gold chaton, and a solid-gold skeletonized rotor, engraved with the H. Moser & Cie. logo.

Reasons to bid

A unique combination of spectacular and highly attractive design, unusual complicated watch mechanics and high-end workmanship characterize the present reference. To a large extent, the attractiveness of this lot is increased by the fact of two small but very creative brands being involved in its release, each having a high reputation among collectors and professionals. The present reference is extremely rare as it is limited to only 15 pieces and will never again be made. Therefore the H. Moser & Cie. x MB&F Endeavour Cylindrical Tourbillon Limited Edition Ref. 1810-1205 would be an excellent purchase for the collector who desires a rare and complicated mechanical watch, made as a collaboration of two small independent watchmaking brands, eminent producers of unconventional and spectacular watches. The number of pieces produced was small, and the extraordinary design and striking ‘ice-blue fumé’ dial execution of the present example certainly add to the appeal of this lot, a piece of history of a modern haute horlogerie.
