Reasons to bid

The civilian versions of the Blancpain Fifty Fathoms diver’s watch, called Bathyscaphe, were long overshadowed by their militaristic siblings. However, this Bathyscaphe watch is very interesting because it is one of the few editions whose dial and bezel contain design citations from the commercially successful Rolex Explorer and Rolex Submariner watches of the time. It is well known that Blancpain tried to find its own style for diving watches and was successful in many ways. Nevertheless, this example is important as a historical testimony to the development process of Blancpain’s diver’s watch design. That said, this Bathyscaphe is beautiful and should be considered an example of the genre and a witness to its time.
