Reasons to bid

The Portugieser Tourbillon Hand-Wound Ref. IW546302 is a non-limited special edition 2015 for the 75th anniversary of the Portuguese, the legendary large-format wristwatch from IWC Schaffhausen from 1940 with a pocket watch caliber. In this Ref. IW546302, we find a still large 43 mm rose gold case and a 37.8 mm hand-wound IWC 98900 caliber, which is large even by modern standards and in which we find the rare additional small seconds – normally the running seconds in watches with a tourbillon are indicated by the rotating tourbillon. The tourbillon of the Ref. IW546302 has two other interesting features: firstly, it is flying, i.e. it is mounted from the dial side without a bridge, and secondly, the tourbillon is not driven by a pinion but by the outer ring gear of the cage, which in particular enabled reliable kinematics for the additional small seconds. The classic Portuguese style with the silver-plated dial, the ‘railroad’ minute track and the applied Arabic numerals creates a special aura of Schaffhausen watchmaking artistry, which is further emphasized by the ‘Probus Scafusia’ medallion in solid gold on the tourbillon bridge and definitely makes this watch a desirable purchase.
