Patek Philippe launched the reference 5905 in 2015 as a 42mm version of the blue-dial platinum Ref. 5960P Annual Calendar Chronograph, produced since 2006, with the same basic functions, albeit with a dial less crowded with complications. Compared to Ref. 5960, the dial of Ref. 5905 didn’t feature a power reserve indicator or the chronograph’s 12-hour counter. Ref. 5905 was given a larger case and dial, characterised by Patek Philippe’s recently favoured scientific (sector) dial style, deriving its origins from the austere men’s watches of the 1930s. As a result, the watch is perceived more as a technical timepiece, without the intrusive display of the character of luxury complicated mechanical models. In 2019, Patek Philippe introduced the Annual Calendar Chronograph Ref. 5905R-001, the present example, in rose gold with a brown sunburst dial, and recently, in 2021, a stainless steel version, 5905/1A-001, with a khaki green dial and on a bracelet.

The present reference, 5905, combines two helpful and easy-to-use complications: a self-winding flyback chronograph and an annual calendar, a complication patented by Patek Philippe and one which requires, with constant use of the watch, the manual correction of the calendar only once a year, during the transition from February to March. Caliber CH 28‑520 QA 24H, the movement of Ref. 5905, is a modified version of the slightly more complex CH 28-520 IRM QA 24H of Ref. 5960, which was a real milestone in the company’s history. It was the first regularly produced chronograph movement developed from the bottom up by Patek Philippe and crafted entirely in-house, and the first self-winding wrist chronograph developed by the Genevan brand. The chronograph mechanism of both calibers has a flyback function that allows the quick restart of the chronograph measurement without any preliminary stages of stopping and resetting the counters.
The modern Ref. 5905 triad presents three types of perception of this complicated watch: a cool, prestigious platinum timepiece with a sunburst blue dial; a slightly military-styled watch with a claim to be a daily wearer, in steel with a khaki green dial on a steel bracelet; and finally, the present example, with a cordial friendly feeling thanks to its case in rose gold and warm iridescent coffee-brown dial.
Reasons to bid
The present Annual Calendar Chronograph Ref. 5905R-001 watch is a fine purchase for a collector or a Patek Philippe watchmaking artistry afficionado who looks to obtain a complicated mechanical watch of a relevant classic, and to a certain extent nostalgic, design from a world-famous watch brand, the market leader in haute horlogerie and complicated timepieces, especially in calendar watches. Patek Philippe annual calendar watches are especially notable since the brand is honoured to be the inventor of this complication. The unique design and functions, executed with Patek Philippe’s impeccable technical workmanship and exquisite artisanal finishing of the case, dial and all movement parts, the high level of which is confirmed by the presence of the Patek Philippe Seal, undoubtedly makes the present lot extremely attractive.
