Lot essay

The double-retrograde complication calibre 2460 R31R7 was developed in 2007 for Patrimony Contemporaine Bi-retrograde Day-Date Ref. 86020 watches. It is based on the automatic caliber 2460 SC, developed for the occasion of Vacheron Constantin’s 250th anniversary, celebrated in 2005. Сaliber 2460 R31R7 is distinguished by the meticulous finishing of all its parts, typical for the brand and conforming to the strict requirements of the Poinçon de Genève (Geneva hallmark), including fine chamfering work, Côtes de Genève decorated bridges, Perlage-embellished mainplate, finely finished screw-heads, and spherical polishing of pivots and pins. The self-winding 22k gold rotor, embellished with a rare circular Clou triangulaire guilloché motif, is set on ceramic ball-bearings, which was considered a technical novelty at that period. The basic caliber 2460 and its modifications belong to a series of in-house watch movements which were intended to gradually increase the share of watches marked with the prestigious Poinçon de Genève, the highest quality mark in the watchmaking industry. In 2019, calibre 2460 R31R7 was modernized to meet the requirements of an updated Poinçon de Genève, being made thinner and with fewer parts, leading to a decrease in the thickness of the watch case to 9.7mm. The updated caliber is abbreviated as 2460R31R7/2, and the updated reference as 4000U.

Continuing the Ref. 86020 production span, from 2007 to 2020, the brand made, according to our knowledge, only six references, two each in rose gold, white gold and platinum, some in limited editions. Ref. 86020/000R-9239, the present example, was issued throughout this period and seems to be the perfect embodiment of the style inherent in the best Vacheron Constantin watches, with an elegant and captivating design. An unusual dial design with two retrograde date and day indicators set this model apart from the familiar classic-style watch designs that Vacheron Constantin is known for. The dial has a matte white background, with the rose gold applied markers and hands giving an overall light and warm cream shade which is very pleasant and attractive. Now the production of Ref. 86020 is discontinued.

Reasons to bid

Therefore, the present lot would appear to be a good chance to purchase an elegant and engaging complicated mechanical watch from a world-famous watch brand, one of the market leaders in haute horlogerie and complicated timepieces. Vacheron Constantin is known for its classic designs and highly complicated mechanical watches, against which the Patrimony Contemporaine Bi-retrograde Day-Date provides a helpful and very intelligent combination of small complications. The Vacheron Constantin Patrimony Contemporaine Bi-retrograde Day-Date Ref. 86020/000R-9239 features a rose gold case of a signature design and Vacheron Constantin rose gold half Maltese cross-shaped triple folding clasp that significantly increase the perceived value of the watch and underscore the aesthetic character of this design. Its self-winding caliber of high-end execution and 42.5mm case perfectly match modern tastes, making the present watch an almost perfect and notable daily wearer.
