Lot essay

Métiers d’art watches with hand-painted artistic dials are very rare for the Girard-Perregaux collection. In such watches, perceived as miniature works of art and therefore possessing undoubted collector-appeal, and in some cases even museum value, an incredible amount of the manual work of the best craftsmen is invested in them. The present example features a miniature dial depicting a map of the Eastern Hemisphere in the rare cloisonné enamel technique. Currently, there are only a few workshops in the watchmaking industry capable of producing enamel dials at a level of execution high enough for the standards of luxury Swiss watchmaking. One of these workshops belongs to the Ulysse Nardin brand, and according to our assumption, this is where the dials for the present limited-edition watch were produced. Here we may find the synergy with the Ulysse Nardin brand, which has long-standing know-how in the manufacture of enamel dials, especially the cloisonné enamel technique that Ulysse Nardin has been practicing since the 1990s. The present 1966 The World Limited Edition watch was officially launched in autumn 2014, while the Ulysse Nardin brand was acquired by the Kering group, which has also owned Girard-Perregaux since 2011, in July 2014. So, along with two other ‘1966’ collection limited edition watches with enamel dials launched at the same time as the present example, presumably this was the first time the two brands collaborated, with some very compelling results.

In such watches, perceived as miniature works of art and therefore possessing undoubted collector-appeal, and in some cases even museum value, an incredible amount of the manual work of the best craftsmen is invested in them.

The enamel dial features a map of the Eastern Hemisphere outlined in thin, flat wires of gold, inherent in the cloisonné enamel technique, while the oceans and continents are shown in colour. The image is formed by painstakingly filling the areas formed by the wires with finely ground enamel powder in different shades. Then the dial-blank is sent to the muffle furnace, where the enamel must melt so that the image is not damaged and the enamel layer has rich, pure tones. The dial-blank is ground and polished by hand, a very dangerous operation that can lead to chips and cracks. Only dials of impeccable quality go into watch assembly.

The exclusively manual execution of this type of dial, which does not involve any automation or mechanization, in fact means each piece can be regarded as one of a kind, which further increases the perceived value of the watch.

Reasons to bid

The 1966 The World Limited Edition Ref. 49534-52-1329S-BB6A is an extremely attractive purchase for the collector, offering the opportunity to obtain an attractive, very rare and spectacular mechanical métiers d’art wristwatch with cloisonné enamel dial from a world-famous traditional watch brand, one of the undoubted leaders in the haute horlogerie watch market. This watch is an impressive showpiece of traditional craftsmanship, and a miniature work of art destined to be worn on the wrist. At the same time, the 40mm size, the warm hues of the traditional round rose gold case, slim and elegant, and the undoubted retention of the relevance of its design and execution would make it a pleasure to wear this watch on a daily basis.
