Reasons to Bid

This Patek Philippe Calatrava Ref. 2511 “Empire” in 18k rose gold is one of the rarest and almost unobtainable Calatravas and also one of the largest Calatrava watches of the 1950s. It is believed that from 1951 to 1954 or 1955, only about 120 examples were produced in yellow gold and 100 in rose gold. The large 36.5 mm case of this watch is designed in the Empire style with fluted lugs and caseband, which is extremely rare for Patek Philippe in general – hence the nickname “Empire”. The case was reportedly made by Dubois & Cie in Le Locle and the dial by Stern Frères. The magnificent caliber 12’’’400 with the characteristic Patek Philippe S-shaped central bridge is a feast for the eyes, while the unusual fine adjustment system with flat swan-neck spring and spiral with Breguet overcoil definitely underlines the high technical mastery it embodies.
