Reasons to Bid

This unique and exceptionally complicated grande and petite sonnerie minute-repeating tourbillon by Gérald Genta stands among the most ambitious creations of the brand’s later years. Produced between 2004 and 2010, it is housed in a 41 mm 18k yellow-gold case with a sapphire back and features an openworked dial with spherical indexes and a filet-sauté guilloché pattern. At its core is the hand-wound Caliber GG 31001, bearing the Geneva Seal, equipped with a reversed hand-fitting system that places the striking mechanism on the back while the time display, tourbillon, hammers and gongs appear dial-side. The watch performs grande and petite sonnerie as well as a Westminster-chiming minute repeater using four hammers on four gongs. It offers 24 hours of power reserve in grande sonnerie mode and 28 hours in petite sonnerie mode, with the selectors and power-reserve indicators positioned on the caseback. It is fitted with a Gérald Genta black leather strap and an 18k yellow-gold buckle. The watch also displays a distinctive blend of stylistic codes. The round Arena-collection case, spherical indexes and sword-shaped hands evoke classical Empire-style design, while the crowns, repeater slide and the richly engraved gold bridges of the movement draw on Baroque decorative traditions. The elaborate “fleurisanne” engraving, rarely used in modern wristwatches, recalls the ornate pocket watches made in 19th-century Fleurier for the Chinese market. Together, these elements make the watch an exceptional example of Gérald Genta’s highest level of mechanical and artistic expression.
