Lot Essay

Among the anthropomorphic Wristmons created by independent Russian watchmaker and inventor Konstantin Chaykin, a special place is held by the unique Stoic Wristmon, sold at Christie’s on 12 November 2024 in support of the European Leukodystrophy Association (ELA). The inspiration for this timepiece was Lucius Annaeus Seneca – a prominent historical figure: philosopher, moralist, and tutor to Emperor Nero. Chaykin personally resonates with Seneca’s maxims, in which readers find guidance on meeting life’s challenges with wisdom and virtue.

For the “Wristmon-izing” of this model, the master chose an ancient theatrical mask as the central motif, reflecting the philosopher’s reputation as one of the greatest dramatists of Ancient Rome. Chaykin placed on the dial a broad, smiling mouth and wide-open eyes through which details of the movement can be seen. In this design, for the first time, he decided to combine a moon phase display with a date indicator, whose numerals are “woven” with Latin letters. Over the course of a month, they form Seneca’s famous phrase: Recte facti fecisse merces est.

The sketch also bears the date of completion – 23 May 2024. Dimensions of the drawing: 24 × 32 cm.

Wristmons Art Collection

The Wristmons is the most famous among all Konstantin Chaykin's collections. The idea of making face-like dials was revolutionary for watchmaking industry.

Thanks to the continuous motion of the indicators, the emotions portrayed change literally every second. It is not surprising that this idea provides a source of endless inspiration for Wristmon's new looks. They are embodied not only in the new watches that join the collection every year, but also in dozens of drawings and sketches.

About the Author

Konstantin Chaykin is a famous watchmaker and inventor who has the greatest number of inventions and watch complications among his colleagues all around the world.

Moreover, Chaykin is also a great graphic artist. All of his timepieces and inventions began with sketches and drawings that he made in countless "moleskins". One may consider them a "chronicle" of his Manufacture. It is not surprising that it was Chaykin who created the world's first self-portrait watch, the Selfie Joker, the dial design of which reflects the features and traits of its creator.
