Lot Essay

On 9 February 2024, Konstantin Chaykin announced the release of a new unique Wristmon – the “Zebra.” The debut of this model also marked the launch of the manufacture’s calibre – the first automatic movement with a micro-rotor to be developed and produced in Russia. This solution was intended not only to reduce the thickness of the watch, but also to underline its exclusivity, as it was created to a private commission and produced as a one-off piece.

The pencil sketch reveals the key design elements of the “Zebra,” characteristic of Chaykin’s animal Wristmons: every detail of the anthropomorphic muzzle has a functional purpose. The Joker-style hours and minutes are divided between large eye-shaped indicators, while the nostrils are used for the large day of the week indicator, with the first letters of each day written in Cyrillic. This complication first appeared in the Wristmon “Minotaur.”

One feature not immediately apparent from the drawing is an entirely new indicator, never before seen in the Wristmons collection: when the crown is pulled out, the background of the Zebra’s smile changes from white to red. The sketch bears the master’s signature and the date of completion – 8 September 2022. Dimensions of the drawing: 24 × 32 cm.

Wristmons Art Collection

The Wristmons is the most famous among all Konstantin Chaykin's collections. The idea of making face-like dials was revolutionary for watchmaking industry.

Thanks to the continuous motion of the indicators, the emotions portrayed change literally every second. It is not surprising that this idea provides a source of endless inspiration for Wristmon's new looks. They are embodied not only in the new watches that join the collection every year, but also in dozens of drawings and sketches.

About the Author

Konstantin Chaykin is a famous watchmaker and inventor who has the greatest number of inventions and watch complications among his colleagues all around the world.

Moreover, Chaykin is also a great graphic artist. All of his timepieces and inventions began with sketches and drawings that he made in countless "moleskins". One may consider them a "chronicle" of his Manufacture. It is not surprising that it was Chaykin who created the world's first self-portrait watch, the Selfie Joker, the dial design of which reflects the features and traits of its creator.
