November auction

[ZURICH – NOVEMBER 21, 2021] Ineichen Auctioneers concluded two special auctions of rare timepieces following their main auctions held in Zurich in November 2021, achieving over CHF 8,000,000 in combined sales an 166% increase from the previous auction in May 2021.

Notable among them were five new world records including:

  • Two for twin Vianney Halter Antiqua Perpetual Calendars that went under the hammer for a total of CHF 360,000. The WG model sold for CHF 190,000 and the YG for CHF 170,000. The previous record for a Vianney Halter Antiqua Perpetual Calendar was CHF 168,750 for a platinum model (May 2021 – sold by Christie’s).
  • Three world records for F.P. Journe pieces, the Souverain Tourbillon Ruthenium which sold for CHF 390,000 against an estimate of CHF 100,000 – CHF 200,000, Vagabondage I, selling for CHF 240,000 against an estimate of CHF 50,000 – CHF 100,000 and Vagabondage II, selling for CHF 225,000 also against an estimate of CHF 50,000 – CHF 100,000. The previous record was CHF 168,750 (2021 – sold by Sotheby’s).

With auction season 2021 in full swing, Ineichen Auctioneers concluded a further two special auctions of rare timepieces at their bi-annual auction in Zurich in November this year.

Their main auction conducted over two days saw a total of 198 vintage, pocket and modern watches go under the hammer. In addition, there were special auctions of 12 sought-after wristwatches in yellow metals (“Alchemy of Gold”) as well as 17 prized timepieces crafted from tantalum, platinum and steel (“Shades of Grey”). The 29 pieces in both special auctions sold for a total of CHF 4,5 million.

Competition was stiff among collectors vying for the chance to make the winning bids on the twin Vianney Halter pieces featuring the watchmaker’s quirky interpretation of the perpetual calendar. Ultimately, the Vianney Halter Antiqua Yellow Gold (estimate CHF 50,000 – CHF 100,000) and the Vianney Halter Antiqua White Gold (estimate CHF 50,000 – CHF 100,000) went to collectors from the United Kingdom and the United States.

F. P. Journe timepieces have been attracting incredible sale prices at auction this year, and this was no exception. The F. P. Journe Chronomètre à Résonance Ruthenium Collection and the F. P. Journe Tourbillon Souverain Ruthenium Collection, each one of 99 pieces in the watchmaker’s final production of movements made from brass with galvanic coatings, sold for CHF 371,000 and CHF 39,000 respectively. This was 290% higher than their estimates. What makes the latter even more significant is that no more than 520 Tourbillon Souverain watches were ever produced.

Meanwhile, one of the rarest version of the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Perpetual Calendar Ref. 25829SP (estimate CHF 100,000 – CHF 200,000) in platinum and stainless steel went under the hammer for CHF 260,000. It is one of only 25 pieces.

Another piece from this watchmaker that is exceptionally difficult to find is the Ref. 25720 with hand-engraved dial. Its rarity is due to the fact that the Audemars Piguet Star Wheel Automatic Ref. 25720PT was one of only nine pieces, marked accordingly at the bottom of the dial (9/9) – a feature that differentiates the piece even further. This piece sold for CHF 43,000, four times above the estimated value.

Independent watchmakers, Konstantin Chaykin, URWERK and Daniel Roth also stood out hammering four to five times above estimate. Chaykin’s Mouse King sold for CHF 30,000. URWERK’s 103-EW sold for CHF 42,000 and Roth’s Perpetual Calendar Skeleton, went for CHF 50,000 against an estimated value of CHF 15,000.

In total 97,5% of all lots were sold with only 5 lots remaining unsold.

The auction house, which ranks second on sales among Swiss watch auction houses, achieved the highest price for an NFT token when Konstantin Chaykin’s Joker sold for NFT Fr. 52080 in May 2021. And in 2020, they recorded the world’s top price for an F.P. Journe Resonance Pisa edition at CHF 400,000 after selling the first timepiece from this line at CHF 300,000.
