Lot essay

In 2020, celebrating the 10th anniversary of its first watch, the Laurent Ferrier brand launched a new entry level Classic Origin model, offered in a round 40mm titanium case with the newly developed hand-wound caliber LF116.01. The first version of this design was the Classic Origin White (Opaline) Ref. LCF036.T1.G1G, a 10th anniversary model. Subsequently, Laurent Ferrier expanded the collection by adding models with gradient dials – in green and blue (the present reference).

Looking back ten years, one can recall the first model of the brand's collection introduced by Laurent Ferrier as being the Galet Classic Tourbillon Double Spiral watch. With the release of this model, the brand clearly showed its intention to operate in the narrow and extremely demanding market of collectors’ watches. This specialisation of the brand is preserved to this day, with a reported annual production of fewer than 200 pieces. However, the launch of the Classic Origin watch, which is a good-value proposition in the collection, is indicative of the brand’s desire to reach a somewhat wider audience, one which would not consider buying watches with tourbillons and other complications due to their higher prices.

For the Classic Origin, a hand-wound caliber LF116.01 was developed, featuring a beautiful bridge layout. This obviously traces its origins to the excellent pocket watch calibers of the early 20th century, produced in the Vallée de Joux, Switzerland. This is evidenced by the traditional design with a round border of bridges around the balance, the characteristic shape of the barrel bridge and, of course, obligatory for Laurent Ferrier watches, the long-blade ratchet pawl, invented in 1891 within the walls of the LeCoultre et Cie. factory, located in the Vallée de Joux.

For the Classic Origin, a hand-wound caliber LF116.01 was developed, featuring a beautiful bridge layout. This obviously traces its origins to the excellent pocket watch calibers of the early 20th century, produced in the Vallée de Joux, Switzerland.

Caliber LF116.01 is finished according to the haute horology connoisseur’s expectations and therefore makes a very pleasant impression. The black rhodium-plated mainplate and bridges, textured by sand-blasting, have hand-polished bevels, the inscriptions are engraved and gilded, the screw heads are polished, and the jewels are set in nice wide-bevelled recesses. The movement specs include such high-tech features as a free-sprung balance and a hairspring with Breguet overcoil, signs of a high-class watch caliber.

The soft shapes and finishing of the Galet titanium case are matched by a graceful yet rather large and easy-to-use turban-shaped crown. The elongated markers and hands of the modified ‘spade & whip’ style, which are given soft streamlined shapes, are made from solid white gold – Laurent Ferrier calls this design ‘Assegai’. It gives the watch a special charm and recognition. Hands of this design are best paired with a polished finish, and that is what is most often offered in the collection, including this watch.

Reasons to bid

The Laurent Ferrier Galet Classic Origin Blue Ref. LCF036.T1.CG should be regarded as an attractive purchase for the collector and connoisseur who desires a very rare, understated and classy dress wristwatch from a modern haute horlogerie watch brand, one of the leading players on the modern collector’s watch market. The combination of typical Laurent Ferrier design features, including the smoothly rounded pebble-shaped case, sleek hands of a unique branded design, and rare hand-wound caliber of a beautiful traditional design featuring haute horlogerie finishing, further enhances the attractiveness of the present lot.
