The Rolex Reference 4048 Chronograph, dating to around 1942, is a rare and historically important chronograph from the brand. With only about 140 examples known to exist, it reflects Rolex’s early efforts to develop waterproof chronographs during the Second World War. This model features a beautifully aged original dial with both telemeter and tachymeter scales and blued steel hands on the tricompax layout. Inside, it is powered by the manually wound Cal. 13’’’ movement, based on a Valjoux 72. The watch is housed in a sturdy steeö Oyster case with a screw-down back, along with its original pushers and crown. Predating the Daytona, the Reference 4048 holds a key place in the evolution of Rolex chronographs.
