This watch reminds me of a leather biker jacket with all sorts of metal things riveted to it, whether they’re shiny or patina, the main thing is that there are more of them. A normal person far removed from the subject would perhaps pass it by with a shrug. For a connoisseur of biker style, there is certainly something to talk about, especially over a bottle of beer. Dolia’s Ref. D01S Chronograph comes from the hands of Tymofii Dolia, an up-and-coming independent watchmaker, and will forever retain the feeling of having been touched by master hands. This is because the exterior as well as the dial and the automatic rotor are all made by him and are visible to the naked eye. Isn’t that what we expect from a watch made by an independent watchmaker?

Lot essay

Tymofii Dolia, aspiring independent watchmaker from Ukraine, works in Prague, Czech Republic. He received his professional training at the Institut Mare de Déu de la Mercè in Barcelona, Spain. He later joined the workshop of Aniceto Jimenez Pita, a former member of the AHCI Academy of Independent Watchmakers, in Barcelona. The desire for a practical, everyday watch that looked impressive and interested people inspired him to start making his own watches. As a starting point for the development of the design, he chose the yin-yang, as a symbol of the unity of opposing beings. Tymofii Dolia extended this principle to the execution of the present example. Various materials and finishing techniques are used, creating a strikingly dynamic appearance.

With the Yin Yang graphic on the dial and the back of the movement, handcrafted with fine decorative techniques, this watch has a spectacular look in addition to the practical stainless steel execution, which is complemented by a reliable and proven Eta/Valjoux caliber 7750.

In particular, the dial consists of two parts with finely hammered bronze and sandblasted rhodium-plated zones. The handmade steel hands look massive. Apparently, it’s a variant of the ‘Pomme de Breguet’ style. The hands have different tempered steel tones to emphasize the difference between the time display and chronograph functions. The sub-dials have contrasting outlines in blued steel. The rotor of the automatic winding mechanism in the ‘mysterious’ design is also a yin-yang graphic in bronze. The 18k gold inertia weight of the rotor is fixed with blued screws. Some steel parts of the movement are also tempered; however, an overview of these components is only possible when the watch is disassembled.

Reasons to bid

Tymofii Dolia has just appeared on the market as an independent watchmaker. This master has the chance to make a name for himself. In this sense, the acquisition of Dolia’S Ref. D01S Chronograph can be seen as a dark horse bet. However, we believe that other motives for acquiring this watch are also important. With the Yin Yang graphic on the dial and the back of the movement, handcrafted with fine decorative techniques, this watch has a spectacular look in addition to the practical stainless steel execution, which is complemented by a reliable and proven Eta/Valjoux caliber 7750. Thus, this watch can definitely be perceived as a spectacular, eye-catching daily wearer.
