Lot Essay

Not every timepiece conceived by Konstantin Chaykin is destined to be brought to life in metal – many ideas remain as original artistic sketches. Chaykin is renowned as a watchmaker deeply fascinated by the way different cultures perceive and measure Time.

In this sketch, the master envisions one possible design for an ultra-complicated astronomical clock, featuring an indicator for the date of Orthodox Easter along with displays for other movable feast days in the liturgical calendar, a perpetual calendar, and several astronomical complications. Through this design, Chaykin sought to convey not only the specifics of the Orthodox calendrical system but also the monumental character of the Strasbourg Cathedral astronomical clock in France, built in the 19th century by clockmaker Jean-Baptiste Schwilgué – the most complex and celebrated Easter-clock mechanism in the world.

The sketch bears the master’s signature and the date of completion – 5 May 2024. Dimensions of the drawing: 24 × 32 cm.

About the Author

Konstantin Chaykin is a famous watchmaker and inventor who has the greatest number of inventions and watch complications among his colleagues all around the world.

Moreover, Chaykin is also a great graphic artist. All of his timepieces and inventions began with sketches and drawings that he made in countless "moleskins". One may consider them a "chronicle" of his Manufacture. It is not surprising that it was Chaykin who created the world's first self-portrait watch, the Selfie Joker, the dial design of which reflects the features and traits of its creator.
