Reasons to Bid

This Patek Philippe Perpetual Calendar Ref. 5040J is a rare and notable example of the brand’s distinctive tonneau-shaped perpetual calendar wristwatch in yellow gold. Produced from 1992 to 2007 in three series, the reference saw approximately 1800 pieces made in yellow gold. The present 5040J is an early first-series example (pre-1998), identifiable by its movement number in the 77xxxx range and its micro-rotor decorated with Côtes de Genève and 22k gold engravings, but without the Calatrava cross. Among its most appealing features are the sigma dial and the applied yellow-gold Breguet numerals—Ref. 5040 being the first Patek Philippe perpetual calendar to use applied Breguet numerals. Equally significant is the presence of the Poinçon de Genève hallmark on the caliber 240 Q, signalling the movement’s high level of finishing. Altogether, this watch presents an excellent opportunity for collectors to acquire an early, uncommon, and highly characterful Patek Philippe perpetual calendar in a refined tonneau case.
