Reasons to bid

The Santos de Cartier is not a watch that goes unnoticed. The story of this magnificent design began in 1904, when the brand developed its first men’s wristwatch at the request of the restless Brazilian aviator Alberto Santos-Dumont and named it Santos to mark the occasion. The characteristic design with a square case, a raised bezel fixed with eight screws and integrated lugs is part of the Cartier legacy that is still alive today. The Santos de Cartier is the longest lasting wristwatch model in the industry – it will soon be 120 years old, which makes it so historically significant. This watch represents the early development of the Santos design in an extremely rare version with a platinum case, while caseback and screws are made of yellow gold. This is an extremely rare Santos de Cartier version; we have only found one similar example with case numbers 14’117/10’238, which was sold at Christie’s in 2015. The watch is fitted with a hand-wound movement from the European Watch and Clock Co., a joint venture between Cartier and Edmond Jaeger, which is produced in the LeCoultre factory in Le Sentier, Switzerland.
